Tamiya's 1/350 scale Bismarck is available online from Squadron

27 May 1941 was the last time the great Bismarck saw the light of day. She sank after a heroic battle with the British Royal Navy, taking over 2,200 German sailors to a watery grave.

Only 115 Bismarck sailors were saved from the cold North Atlantic waters.

In 1989, a team led by Dr. Robert D. Ballard discovered the wreckage of the Bismarck 15,500 feet deep (4,700 meters) 400 miles west of Brest, France.

My model depicts the Bismarck as she appeared during Dr. Ballard’s discovery.

The model is Tamiya’s 1/350 kit, which at the time was the best Bismarck model available. From 1991 until 1996 the model was sunk in 50 cm of water in my 200 liter fresh-water aquarium, an excellent home for small fish to breed.

Over the years, different algae grew on her and it was always interesting to see the changes in appearance. Some small details must have been interesting to the fish too, as they are missing today.

Today, the model is in my “drydock” wardrobe, awaiting a newer, bigger aquarium to be sunk in.
